Re: New years resolutions
To face my demons and get on a plane to Australia to follow the Lions tour. I have trouble with 1 hour to the UK so this is a biggie. I might involuntarily emigrate if I make it there and can't face the journey back!

I flew 32,000 miles in 6 weeks and even managed to get myself on the 24 hour flight home the morning after the final test so no involuntary emigration after all.
It wasn't fun at times (the turbulence on the flight over to HK nearly finished me off completely) but proud to say I managed it.

I quite like the turbulence over Australia - quality turbulence not like the rubbish you get over the Irish sea.

I posted this last year and failed at all 4, so I'm trying again this year.Peg Leg wrote:1. A 5km run

So far I've made the Gym (had to give up training at home, too loud to do early morning and missing too much time with my girls in the evening) 3 mornings a week.
Iv'e also started running (properly), last yr I gave it a go but didn't have the discipline to stick at it. Mostly because I was disappointed with the fact that I was spent after 500m, my lower back had me crippled after that and I'd merely jog/walk for another 2.5km, but never any gains. So in the gym, I've been using the threadmill (when my leg lets me) and today I made it to 1.75km (1.25 @ 10km/hr and the last .5 @ 12km/hr). I've never run 1.75km in my entire life.

Fair play, the treadmill can be a torture. If you're anywhere near Ranelagh the gym above Superquinn/Supervalu have a specialist one that is extra padded/cushioned, I don't know the in's and outs of it but it makes it a hell of a lot easier to clock up the extra k's rather than pounding them out if you get my drift.Peg Leg wrote:I posted this last year and failed at all 4, so I'm trying again this year.Peg Leg wrote:1. Re: New years resolutions
I hear ya, my Gym is in Swords (beside the office). Have to say, I'm enjoying the threadmill for now, although restraining oneself from constantly checking the distance is difficult. I plan to hit 4km on the threadmill and then try and find a 3k road run to enter and see how it goes (I expect to be on crutches for a day or 2 after).TerenureJim wrote:Fair play, the treadmill can be a torture. Who should I go to about picking runners?

Re: New years resolutions
I hear Elvery's have a 'lab' where they look at your gait on a treadmill, and recommend shoes based on that. Alternatively, if you are anywhere near Terenure, Mick Dowling is very good for advice on running shoes. He'll tell you what type of things you need to look for.Peg Leg wrote:Who should I go to about picking runners?

Re: New years resolutions
Usually it is pronation in gait which causes a lot of the problems (i.e. being crippled) after running for any distance. The Saucony Omni Pro are the best weighted shoes I've ever used for correcting how my foot hits and rolls off the ground and I swear by them.

Re: New years resolutions
There is (or at least was) a very good runner shop in Glasnevin/Whitehall - just off Collins' Ave I think.Peg Leg wrote: Who should I go to about picking runners?
They'll get you to run across a mat, check your levels or pro/supra-nation and recommend the best pair of runners for your feet and running style.
Re: New years resolutions
Great progress! I'm not able to stick the treadmill at all, as you say it's so hard to avoid constantly looking at the display!Peg Leg wrote: Who should I go to about picking runners?
Amphibian King in Ashtown/Bray are very good for gait analysis, or Base2Race.
I'm not so sure about how well trained the guys in Elverys would be, but AK is a specialist running/Tri shop.
Also there's usually good value to be had in the Asics outlet in Kildare a Village, some sizes not available in certain shoes, so you can be unlucky, but if you know what kind of pronator you are etc they'll usually be able to sort you out. They also tend to have different range of colours/styles, that you don't see in the high street "sport" shops.

+1 on Kildare Village, much better range than any sports shops in town in terms of the runners they have.Amz wrote:Also there's usually good value to be had in the Asics outlet in Kildare a Village, some sizes not available in certain shoes, so you can be unlucky, but if you know what kind of pronator you are etc they'll usually be able to sort you out. Don't know how other people fare but for me one thing to watch out for is to get a runner with a decent lining especially around the big toe as even a little regular running can lead to a hole occurring.
Also socks, often overlooked are hugely important IMO. I picked up some underarmour ones in the states that are insanely good in comparison to the likes of the Wilson 4 pack of sports socks that you'll get in Lifestyle. Well worht having a look around online.
Re: New years resolutions
My brother recommends these. They take a lot of time measuring your feet and the way you run and he keeps going back to them as for what you get they're quiet reasonable(his opinion).Peg Leg wrote:Who should I go to about picking runners?
