Don't mean to sidetrack the thread, but would this result have happened if we had invested in 7s??

I don't know. But lets say the Women's Rugby team have come a long way from when they had to leave Twickenham in 2004 having played before England v Ireland as they had not been allocated any tickets to stay and watch the Men's game!Peg Leg wrote:Those dastardly D4 types no doubt!janeymac08 wrote:
Clearly my point is give credit where it is due. (And shame those who seemed to have put nothing but obstacles in their way). The IRFU took their time in getting behind them.
The main thing is that they are now being well supported by the IRFU and the Women are delivering.

Re: WRWC France 2014
I think they have attracted a fair few women (from GAA/Soccer) into rugby because of the 7s and the chance to play in the Olympics.LeRouxIsPHat wrote:Don't mean to sidetrack the thread, but would this result have happened if we had invested in 7s??
Main thing that has happened is that the IRFU are supporting them now.

I also think the rise of 'friendly' tag competitions has helped a lot of women get involved in the game.

Superb win. Congrats guys. Well done on a great achievement.
But I wish people stopped saying "girls" like "well done girls" - sounds so creepy and disgusting. They're not girls.

Marta was watching the game with me when she said, "You know, most of these sports are based on the idea of one group protecting its territory from invasion by another group." "Yeah," I said, trying not to laugh. Girls are funny.

Do you also get creeped out when we refer to the men's team as "the lads" or "the boys"?suisse wrote:Superb win. Congrats guys. Well done on a great achievement.

Going to be really upset when they see the squad for the match for tomorrow. Only 4 Munster players, they'll be calling for a judicial enquiry.

Resting Briggs is a very smart move as she is crucial in the knockout stages.

The Women march on.
Women's Rugby World Cup: Ireland beat Kazakhstan to reach semis
IRELAND 40 (14)
Tries: Lynch 2, Rosser, penalty try, Fleming, McGinn Cons: Shields 5
KAZAKHSTAN 5 (5)
Try: Karatygina
Ireland have reached the semi-finals of the Women's World Cup for the first time by beating Kazakhstan 40-5 in their final pool game on Saturday.
Having followed an opening win over the USA with a stunning victory over champions New Zealand, the Irish knew a last-four place was within their grasp.
They led 14-5 at half-time in Marcoussis thanks to tries by new cap Sharon Lynch and fly-half Tania Rosser.
Four more tries in the final quarter saw Ireland race clear to victory.
The first was a penalty try and then back rowers Siobhan Fleming and Lynch scored to make it three tries in a six-minute spell.
Winger Vikki McGinn added a late touchdown for Philip Doyle's side.
Kazakhstan were just 7-5 down at one stage in a competitive first half, their try coming from Svetlana Karatygina after a period of sustained pressure.
Ireland had rested most of the players who pulled of the memorable 17-14 over holders New Zealand

Re: WRWC France 2014
Canada draw with England and thus actually knock New Zealand out in the process, actually a decent chance of Ireland winning this now
