Moving June tests to July is an interesting one. Will mean some knock-on changes to training regimes.

That'll mean if IRFU stick with preseason programe that some guys will miss 1st round of Europe. As they only return week or 2 as is.

Yeah that's what I thought. Just means it's handier for the SH really?

And even October up to 1st game of European games. Also the November tests moving forward means if a game like Chicago happened again it'd be in October

I think its made the season worse for the NH. If they're moving tests to july, they should have moved the november tests BACK a few weeks but they've moved those forwards. So the internationals will now have less time to get up to speed for the november tests.


I'm sure it was done so that the SH would drop their claims for split share of the money generated instead of the home team keeping the money.

Good to the likes of Georgia and Romania getting home games v the 6N teams in the July window. Can get an idea of their ability level with all the talk of P&R in the 6N.

Can see the likes of Pro 12 maybe go back a week or 2 but that effectively hampers the Autumn Internationals which come forward

So if I understand this correctly, the Northern Hemisphere club season will start late September, first internationals late October/early November, the 6 Nations will be similar time but may change a bit, the domestic seasons will end mid-June (or early July for France), and the 3-test touring window at the end of the season will be from c.5 July to c.26 July, or something like that. Rugby Championship will be the same, more or less.

So our guys will have the last week of July and the first week or maybe two weeks of August off, before a 6-7 week pre-season for a late September start.

These changes prove that World Rugby have no real interest in player welfare, a bit like the concussion issue, lots of optics, but no fundamental reform.

This structure is going to put huge pressure on NH eigth-week rest / pre-season, which has been validated in Irish rugby at least (certainly the French don't subscribe to it).

At a minimum it will mean absense of NH players from the early rounds of European League competitions. It will also mean European competitions will have to be moved or reformed.

From an Irish perspective it means little or no top team sports in September, the month with the best weather of the year for field games - GAA have already signalled probable move of All Ireland finals to last weeks of August.

Trying to harmonise NH and SH seasons will mean more French Top14 rugby on hard grounds in high temperatures - which NH players are not born to, unlike S Africans and Aussies.

Against this, on grounds of player welfare and social disruption, but I'm only a rugby supporter.

As far as I know the season still starts early September. Still Pre season games on August. But July is only a 2 test period. November games will now be week 1-3 in November instead of 2-4.
It'll be interesting how much of a kbock on it has on European campaign and the big gap between end of clubs season and July.
Like say a club misses Pro12 playoffs and Europe like Munster last year or Connacht this year.
That'd mean no game between mid May and July but your season still isn't over.

Probably unlikely. It would be glorified B&I Cup.

considering how much internationals are away and NIQ limits am not sure how much benefit the Irish sides would get out of it

PR from the League.
The PRO12 has been consistently targeted for undermining by the PRL.
They want to pinch the Pro12's Crown Jewels.

If the new changes are meaning longer seasons in a way. When do IRFU implement their X weeks rest without effecting European campaigns etc

If they're aligning seasons there's always an option of moving the summer break and leaving the schools calendar behind at pro level.
