Bookies don't often get it wrong, not even South African ones!

Ireland are being quoted at 1/2 with France second favourites at 9/4 and South African outsiders. That's a big advantage in a three horse race and pre-match SA V Fr in Pretoria last weekend was full of knowledgible speculation about this contest with insiders saying it was Ireland's to lose.

Apparently LA is getting the 2028 Olympics, which means that Paris will be getting the 2024 Games. What effect this will have on IRB deliberations remains to be seen but wasn't there a view that they didn't want RWC being overshadowed by the Olympics?

This has been writing the headlines in French sports media for the past fortnight and is also dragging in questions about the composition of the Montpellier Squad.

Certainly it may impact on the French bid presentation, but it could also cause Bernie & Alrad some serious grief. Using image rights is always associated with tax evasion in French sport and is one of the big no-nos for the sporting public who think their stars get enough anyway. In France, few things are guaranteed to cause loss of support faster than the "reforming" President found 'cushioning his cave' with non-taxable earnings.

World Rugby can’t have been impressed by comments made by Phillipe Folliot, president of Rugby Parliamentary Friendship Society in France who, while enthusiastically supporting the Rugby World Cup bid, described it as “a big dress rehearsal” for the 2024 Paris Olympics adding that it was a “chance to test security”.

But if I understand it correctly France are estimating this based on projections and forecasts. The Irish bid is underwritten by Merrion Street and Stormont. That effectively makes the French bid aspirational, but the Irish bid as cast iron as you'll get.

The French government are also underwriting their bid. However, our mooted ticket prices are lower (which does not cause any financial loss for World Rugby) and our fans are more enthusiastic, which will lead to fuller stadiums.

No one to write the cheques though, running on a reduced budget at present and all road repairs stopping in October as years allocation is done until April unless they go back to work, it's a farcical situation where they are actually contemplating this Irish Language Act which will incur over 100 million to change road signs alone and it sounds like DUP have been stitched up with the bribe cash as it has to be voted on and the Scottish Tories are not happy
