Not So Special Project Player XV

Post by simonokeeffe »

Project players are and will be in the 6n getting blown out of proportion again, so highest profile team of non capped/never will be residency qualified players. Will update O.P as it goes

Obviously JGP is captain ;-)

Vermass
McCartney
Borlaise
Sykes
Gissing
Heenan
Fox-Matamua
Auv'a

McGrath (c)
Nikora
Poolman
Te'o
Van Der Heever
Ludik
TB

Not considered due to injury: Herbst

Half tempted to do a XV of non project players Ive see in the project XVs

Isa, Adeoloken, Shane O'Leary, Herring, McCarthy, Bent

Borlaise was more trumpeted IMO
Warwick and Mafi got ruled out over 7s

Couldn't include Adeoloken in that group as his family, AFAIK, came here as genuine economic migrants before he started playing rugby. Once he, and his family, were granted Irish citizenship, he's as Irish as anyone on this Forum.

Yeah its crazy, balls.ie especially keep including him in the lists of overseas Irish players or whatever codology they try to use

Teo only did 2 years at Leinster and therefore never qualified for Ireland

If the purpose is to find the worst project players, I don't think either Te'o or Payne should be there, they were good. McCartney too. The rest, fair enough. I'd say you could already include Schalk Van Der Merwe up at Ulster. And maybe Troy Nathan, he was rubbish.

Was Auva'a a project player? I thought he was Irish.

Edit: Just checked, my mistake. Though as he started with Belvo, I don't know if he would count as a project.

He was qualified to play for Ireland before he was awarded a Leinster contract. IIRC we were made wait and no exception was permitted.

Yeah, qualified via his time in Belvo.

And Adeolokun is nuts on that list - might as well put in O'Gara or Heaslip or someone like that.

I think that was his point. I've seen a Balls.ie project XV article that had Adeolukun, and one or two others that weren't project players, on their list.

Bingo

Im going for project eligible as well as residency qualified players; Te'o was talked of a lot of potentially playing for Ireland via residency. Going for panic rather than quality

Auv'a filled a backrow gap :)

Thought Shaun Payne had an Irish grandparent but almost played for Wales on residency?

Never had any interest in playing for Wales. Hansen sounded him out once but was given short shrift

Cheers. Was I right about his IQness?
Welsh attitude to players qualifying, hypocritical as it was, has changed a tune with Parkes, Beirne, McNichol (know all 3 different cases)

Yup, the guy actually came north to play for Ireland, but ended up in Wales as Irish rugby was still in 'ship 'em out' rather than 'bring 'em home' mode at the time.
