Just seen on his twitter that John Muldoon is retiring at the end of the season. A fantastic guy who was unfortunate to only get a couple of Irish caps at a time when competition in the Irish back row was fierce. An inspiration for the westies and he'll be badly missed although somehow I think he's going to end up somewhere in the Connacht coaching set up.
Love the way a couple of years ago in that ERC match in the Sportsground against Wasps, he bullshitted the ref into allowing Connacht kick to touch after the 80 minutes (rule allowing kicks after the 80 only came in a couple of weeks later). Result, Connacht line out maul and try - and a great win.

IIRC wasn't that the reason Wasps had to play us in the Aviva instead of the Ricoh?brenno wrote:https://mobile.twitter.com/JohnMuldoon8 ... 230849?p=v

Re: John Muldoon retiring
Serious competitor. He somehow managed to do well with referees despite not always appearing to show the respect they crave , I always thought it must be because he is a really good guy when not on the pitch. He played well in good Connacht sides and he played well in bad Connacht sides. He deserved his Pro12 win for all the bad days that he had soldiered on before. If he had 40 or 50 Irish caps you feel he would not have shown up badly in those games. Hope he goes well after rugby.

Re: John Muldoon retiring
Dare I say that had he played for Leinster or Munster he would have won a lot more caps.
A real back row operator of the dark arts.
A real players player, a great captain and played the game with a smile.
He'll be missed and not just by the people of Connacht.

Go well John. Not only a great player for Connacht but the core that you can build a team around. A very rare beast.olaf the fat wrote:One of the good guys.

It was a piece by Gavin Cummisky - interestingly he mentioned that Mul would be reuniting with former player Conor McPhillips but failed to mention that Aly Muldowney would be joining too!!!simonokeeffe wrote:Cant find source again but hes taking a coaching gig at bristol
John Muldoon set to reunite with Pat Lam at Bristol
Connacht player set to join coaching ticket at English club
John Muldoon is set to join Pat Lam’s coaching ticket at Bristol next season. The 35-year-old flanker retires this summer after 15 seasons with his native province.
Muldoon could be a replacement for Mark Bakewell, who takes over as Leicester forwards coach under former Leinster supremo Matt O’Connor.
Leicester had previously approached Paul O’Connell but he turned down the position to remain working with the Munster Academy, while also accepting a formal role with the Ireland under-20s this season.
The Lam coach to Muldoon captain partnership proved the most successful in Connacht history as the province captured the Pro 12 title when beating Leinster in the 2016 final at Murrayfield.
A Galway minor hurler back in 2000, Muldoon went on to win three caps for Ireland, the last against New Zealand in 2010.
The move would see him reunite with another former Connacht player in Dubliner Conor McPhillips, who is backs coach at Bristol.
Former Leinster outhalf Ian Madigan is also at the club that are firmly on course for a return to the English Premiership with 14 wins from 14 so far this season.
Bristol’s billionaire owner Stephen Lansdown also brought in All Black backrow Stephen Luatua with more international signings expected.

Re: John Muldoon retiring
I remember his last cap v New Zealand. Broke his arm and played on for a while. Maybe I shouldn’t be encouraging that particular brand of crazy, but it’s hard not to respect it. Thought it was stiff that he didn’t get another go after showing that kind of guts. Really hope they win the challenge cup this season, would be a fitting exit.
