Cheers for the info. Conor O'Brien started rather than benching though.

Any news on when Tommy O'Brien is expecting to return from injury?
Look out Itchy, he's Irish

More a comment on changing times than this specific squad. I am sure these things are cyclical anyway.

Blackrock players often emerge later for whatever reason.

http://www.irishrugby.ie/rugby/fixtures ... /42856.php

2 tries for Josh O'Connor(14) and a try for Jamie Osborne(15)
Cooke used the advantage to left foot an inviting cross-field kick out to the right wing. O'Connor collected it on the Italian 10-metre line and outpaced the covering defender to run in a well-taken eighth-minute try, crisply converted by Cooke.
That score arrived in the 24th minute when Naas full-back Osborne threw a dummy, ghosted through a gap and flew past an attempted tackle to run in from 40 metres out. Cooke, who provided the assist, also converted to restore the seven-point gap.
Italy were caught narrow in defence and Hession and Osborne linked up to feed O'Connor who used a strong hand-off to finish expertly from 35 metres out.

Ireland underage players in Blackrock are not allowed to attend a lot of the training camps for academic reasons (after one year quite a few of them did very poorly in the Leaving Cert), so that doesn't help.

not sure that's the reason.. more that it's rare for them to have a starter on their SCT side that isn't a 6th year, so players take longer to emerge.

This year they had the following involved with Leinster to various degrees, from last years SCT winning side:

Donnacha Mescal(Leinster u20/Prop)
Thomas Clarkson(Leinster u19/Prop)
Cian Duffy(Leinster u19/Prop)
Hugo O’Malley(Leinster u18/Prop)

Sean Molony(Leinster u20/Hooker)
Jack Stapleton(Leinster u19/Lock)
Michael McGagh(Leinster u20/Backrow)
Ed Brennan(Leinster u19/Backrow)
Sean O'Brien(Leinster u19/Backrow)
Liam Heylin(Leinster u18/Backrow)

Louis O’Reilly(Leinster u20/Scrumhalf)
Ross Barron(Leinster u19/Scrumhalf)
David Fitzgibbon(Leinster u19/Outhalf)

James Tarrant(Leinster u20/Outhalf)
Gavin Jones(Leinster u19/Centre)
Tom Maher(Leinster u19/Wing)
Liam Turner(Leinster u20/Wing)

Most of whom were 6th years last season, bolded return this season.

Dunne is overage, turns 20 this month.

Baird wasn't on the list of players I saw who were in attendance, one of several big names absent, possibly due to injury.

notable absentee's: Ryan Baird, Scott Penny, Harry Byrne.

Liam Turner is an interesting case.

Will concerns about his lack of height and top end athleticism mean he will get passed over?

To start he will need to nail down a starting position for Ireland u20, which he may struggle to do.

There is already a player from his age grade in the academy at his likely long term position - O'Sullivan and there are several good prospects at the age grade below him.

Leinster meeting last night was supposedly informed about an IRFU decision to restrict Irish U.20 play-time prior to 6N and JWC, because of excessive injuries. Haven't heard full details yet but limit on maximum number of games and specific weeks become closed dates.

Main impact will be next Season onwards, but it may have some impact for the remainder of this Season. Not really surprised considering our MIA players for both competitions in last two seasons.

The lad has bags of talent for sure and a great rugby brain. As you say he's not the tallest but probably the same height as Larmour. Liam's issue is that he wasted the opportunity to go to the rugby production factory Larmour attended and potentially squandered his future across the road..... ;-)

Larmour is a special case thought, I don't think Turner is in the same of talent bracket.

Hopefully I'm wrong on that, but there has been many very good underage backs who turn out to be too small for pro rugby. Hopefully that isn't the case with him.

He has gotten off to a decent start with Trinity at least.
