Just watched a wonderful fightback by Irish Womens Sevens team against Aus for 5th Place in current HSBC Series in the US. Eventually beaten by 21-19 with winning score by Aus in overtime. But Ireland had come back from 14-0 to lead by 14-19 with heart and skill. Well done to the team who had beaten Russia and England among others.

Not certain but 5th Place may have been where they needed to finish for World Series qualification.

Qualification for what though?
The women are one of the 11 core teams (12th team per tournament are always invitational). The 11th ranked team at the end of the season gets relegated and has to requalify via winning the Hong Kong qualifying tournament.

5th place is a good start. Long may it continue.
Highlights from Glendale were on sky last night - standards of women's rugby have improved hugely in the last couple of years.

Not sure where or how, but a video of Dan Leavy popped up in some feed or other. Worth a watch, he is some player.
You'd get the impression from the video that everyone on the team would see Dan behind them when they look in the mirror (except Luke McGrath, who Dan Leavy sees when he looks in the mirror)

Used to go frequently when I was a nipper, the folks had friends who had a B&B over there (son raced- can't remember which category they all looked huge then). My memories of Douglas- Paul Daniels Magic shows and Motorbike shops. Gave me my love of bikes, which didn't really end out so well... poor mam still blames herself!

Shortest day of the year tg.
Bearing in mind (for the pedants) that most days have 24 hours in them, well on this planet they do anyway.
Could (is) be different on Mars for instance.

Not sure if this qualifies as a Rant or Rave, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Irish Revenue's despatch of a nasty -almost 5-year old - Christmas card to Pettigo plc. might be a harbinger of things to come.

The temperature across Europe has been rising. "Gilet Jaunes" in France and Belgium will not be the last proletariat protest this winter. Socialist - Liberal protest against authoritarian Government in Hungary. Protests in Sweden against decisions of Government. And all the while, Corporate profits grow and Executive remuneration grows steadily more obscene.

Minister for Finance Donoghue returns from a low-profile trip to New York where he has mixed with fellow Finance Ministers of all these countries. His Government has just entered a pact with their opposition which will see them in power through 2019. Brexit will dominate the media agenda for at least the next 4 months. Personally, he has just listened to a colleague Minister tell how the cost of a much-needed National Paediatric Hospital has escalated remorselessly.

So what better time to launch a 'soft' guerilla attack on a pharmaceutical company awash with cash.

€1.6Bn is not a huge sum in today's corporate world. However, in an economy valued at somewhere between €55 - €60Bn per annum, €1.6Bn can fund some important expenditures and minimise political pressure, but produce a real emotional (and voting) impact in 2-3 years time.

No complaints from this quarter. It's past time that Governments began to exercise some re-distribution of Corporate excess. Use it well and there'll be no revolution.

Delighted to make the pre-Christmas game for the first time in years (and what a squeaky bum game it was!). Capped it off finally meeting IanD and his significant other (despite them being at the wrong end of the ground) and got to wave his flag for a bit. I also bought a hat.
