He probably has aspirations to be a head coach one day. The opportunity to work in a different system with a top class coaching team would be deemed as a positive for most - certainly not a demotion.

That's a strong appointment if the speculation is correct. You don't get to coach at Six Nations level for over a decade if you have nothing about you.

I know feck all about McBryde but given his pedigree and our brains trust's recent record for hiring I'd be optimistic.

I wonder is Leo moving closer to a Director of Rugby job. That's a lot of experience to bring in to the setup for him to be exclusively looking after the scrum

For Scrum Coach read scrum, maul, breakdown and lots more bits and pieces. In McBryde's case it may also include line-out throwing. To have survived alongside Gatland for a decade, this guy will have a lot to offer.

Assuming it's true, I'd say Lancaster played a big role in getting McBryde in. He'd know what he's about from coming up against him all the time in the 6N.

Plus I have a horrible habit of underestimating the Welsh national team due to their domestic form.
Firstly so much this. I think most of us suffer from this particular problem.

Agree with your assessments. Regardless if you like Gatland or not he's a winner and wouldn't have kept this guy about if he wasn't doing the goods.

As for mildy saying this is a step down you could have argue the same thing about Lancaster who was thrown aside after the England world cup debacle and we all know how that worked out.

So Leinster won't have a scrum coach in preseason or during the WC?

No but its rumoured to be the welsh scrum coach, who obviously will be busy until post WC.

If we have to wait until after the RWC to get someone of McBryde's level then I'm fine with that.

Get someone like Ross or Reggie in for a stint in pre-season if necessary, although I'm sure Leo could handle it.

No he starts his new role on july 1st. So unless he double jobs until post WC, leinster will be without a scrum coach, which isn't ideal given we have a bunch of young front rowers who need coaching and development.

No he's going to be national academy coach until after WC.
Ross would be a good call, don't think the Women are doing much this summer, there's no WC for them.

I'm sure Peter Smyth could get more involved. What's Roly Meates up to these days?

It would seem like the perfect time for Ross to get involved, particularly if it was alongside someone more experienced. Not sure how much scrummaging will really be done in pre season anyway but I like the idea of the young front rowers hearing from a few different voices over the next year or so.

Congrats to Fogarty anyway, nice guy and it's a huge opportunity for him.

Yep, McBryde confirmed:

Sounds like a very solid appointment. Some serious international level experience on our staff now.

Once again we see Leo's willingness to drop any ego and bring in strong experienced outside characters. He has to be seriously applauded for that.

Where did this national academy come from?
