Look at all the talented players they produced and then they would lose nearly every year with the best individual players on the pitch every year in the cup. Last year was great that they got rid of that drought but will be interesting to see if they can back it up this year with a supposedly even more talented team this year with by far the best individual players in the competition. They should have a lot more trophies considering the amount of players they produced. Someone like Scott Penny made his debut for Leinster a few months after school and he won no silverware because he lost to Belvo every year he played (5 years in a row) ,
James Ryan and Max Deegan won no Senior Cups as they lost to Clongowes in their final year in school and then that Clongowes team lost to Belvo and then Roscrea went on to win it that year

That’s not true at all, look how strong the Leinster academy is now, we have one of the strongest academies in the world
Look how strong the Leinster team is now all those players came from one of the top six fee paying schools. The amount of talented players these schools are producing (especially Michael’s) is great for Leinster rugby

Look how strong the Leinster team is now all those players came from one of the top six fee paying schools. The amount of talented players these schools are producing (especially Michael’s) is great for Leinster rugby

It isnt really when you want sport to develop more. Schools cups are great to an extent but focus on it doesnt help at all the rest of club rugby both age grade and adult especially when you look at numbers who drop out of the sport forever very soon after playing rugby in school be they those who played on their schools 1sts or 4ths

Now do you understand why some people can be so dismissive of Michael’s?

You need to dial down your view that Michaels have most of the best players every year and should have won more cups.

They don’t have a monopoly on talent and even if they have more representative players or players heading into the Academy, its a team sport. And good team’s have to be mentally right to win.

Michael’s have fluffed their lines at least twice in the last decade, once in the final, but that is sport. 4 finals and 2 wins in 10 years. 3 wins in 12. Also, the only school apart from the Rock to win the double more than once. Both times in the last 7 years. Not shabby.

Belvedere (2006), Terenure (1958) & Castlenock (1920) are the only other schools ever to do it.

So yes, Michaels are in a purple patch right now, but they have no right to win. It’s fair to say they have the added pressure of being favourites to win again but they have competition and have to show the appetite to climb the mountain again. No guarantees. It will have to be earned and probably some luck as well.
