I don't go to that particular fast food chain that often, more of a KFC guy myself, but when I heard that they had all closed I had a sudden craving.

As I understand it, they want to ramp up to 15k tests a day and do agressive trace and test. We already seem to be close to capacity for a country our size and theirs rumours testing kits may need to be rationed internationally for healthcare workers. 20% of cases in Spain and Italy are healthcare workers. I think we're close enough to that as well at them moment. For every ICU case we have something like 250 healthcare workers with the virus. Mind about 150 have been admitted to hospital in the early stages.

Watching the speculation and posturing of the Trump cheerleaders in US Financial markets on CNBC, CNN & Bloomberg as to whether the impact of CV19 would be a V, U, or L-shaped curve has been one of the major annoyances to me over the past fortnight. Yes, I have been told there is a remote control which facilitates changing channels, but watching market news is the nearest I have to live sports and the markets were the other part of my life for decades.
However, I'm now fairly convinced that they've all got it wrong and missed the letter of the alphabet which is most likely, W. The Governors of two of the wealthiest States, NY and Calefornia, are shouting from the rooftops that they are entering into huge catastrophies and nobody is listening. Both Governors have vast metropolitan areas with densely populated cities and minimal public health facilities and the Chief Medical Officier in each State is warning that their CV19 profile thus far, mirrors that of Lombardy and Madrid.
If the Big Apple and LA are impacted anything like Madrid, the media coverage, market effect and social impact will drive the US into a frenzy. If they are followed by Chicago and Atlanta, as some medico-social commentators are sugggsting, the US networks will make Trump a pariah and the consequences for the 300 million people in the US could be carnage.
Nobody in the published world of public health medicine has been able to offer a rational explanation thus far as to different impact of CV 19 in Lombardy and Madrid, compared say to Wuhan or Tokyo. Leave aside Singapore, or S Korea, or even Germany, where prior experience of SARS and excellent Public Health systems may have combined to quell the worst impacts. Why N Italy and the capital of Spain?
It's may be the aged population. It may be the relative population density. It may be multi-causal. Whatever it is, it has two CMOs in two of the most influential States in the US incredibly scared. I hope their worst fears are groundless but I must confess that the mindless rantings of the guy at the podium in the daily Press Briefings from the White House are doing little to convince me that he knows, or cares, what's really going on in NYC or LA. And that is scary.

The two most important words in it are "aged population".
Ireland's mortality rate is very low.
The obvious reason for this is that the "aged population" has gone to ground.
How we arrived at this happy situation is worthy of examination.
The US is a very complex situation.
Skyscrapers and the population density that goes with them must be an extremely tricky problem to deal with.
The states that don't have this problem can (if they choose) deal with COVID 19 in a similar way to Ireland.
How to deal with Skyscraper populations, I wouldn't even know where to begin.
Will we see a mass exodus from the big cities and to where?
We got lucky but were smart enough to realise it.
We got early warning and we cried wolf but not too loudly.
We had at least one guy, McConkey, who looked panicky early on and for whatever reason, probably his obvious sincerity it got through to the people that mattered, people of my age, 65+.
Others, though, were more measured but still mindful of the problem.
Most importantly of all, we have a holding government who haven't played politics.
If our "luck" holds and mostly our 60-s get the virus then we'll come out of this ok.
We should all hope that the US find a way through this without hitting an iceberg of Titanic proportions.
If the US goes down we will all suffer, Ireland especially.
Trump's problem is that he believes he's infallible.
He has got away with it so far because of the incompetence of the Democrats and because he has challenged a system that quite honestly needed to be challenged.
However CMOs are neither politicians nor businessmen and challenging them would be counterproductive, the Donald would do well to realise that CMOs are not in the business of fake news and neither is the COVID 19 epidemic.
They are there to be listened to and very carefully at that.

That's pretty standard in a crisis. The Italian PM COnti has an 81% approval rating, Macron is way up too.

Thought there was two swabs, one for the nose and one for the throat but don't know tbh. RP can give us the gory details when he's recovered.
On second thoughts maybe it would be two much information.
The testing regime has been tightened, potential cases much have high temp etc.
The accuracy of the testing is obviously a concern.
One way around this and it's not ideal is to perform three tests and where there is a discrepancy accept the two that are in agreement.
This reduces the margin of error to acceptable levels however it would mean a huge extra load on the whole testing operation.
At a guess this may well be happening but only with health care workers so as to ensure that they are not contributing to the case load.
Also we need them so badly that we need to get them back on their feet asap if they do contract the CV.
